What is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage is exploration of muscle fibres and connective tissue through deep manipulation of soft tissue with the hands, thumbs. Elbows and forearms can also be used.
Massage is usually focused on a specific part of the body. As the massage progresses, the therapist slowly investigates muscle fibres and connective tissue for damage. If damage is found, the therapist works to correct these problem areas.
Damage is usually in the form of tiny adhesions or 'knots' that have formed through overuse of the muscle, keeping the muscle static for too long or just through excessive stress. Muscles become shorter in length which reduces flexibility and blood supply to them.
These tiny adhesions can be formed on the connective tissue and can be felt as 'knots'. These 'knots' pull the muscles tighter and give you less flexibility and pain. Muscle fibres can also be broken from overuse and strain of the muscle. These can feel much more solid and even more inflexible.
Techniques are used to move across the grain of the muscle fibres as well as with them. Muscles are also gently lifted and moved and muscle structures are separated and stretched. This gives greater flexibility and helps lengthen the muscle to its correct length again, which also reduces the chance of muscle injury occurring again.
Who is deep tissue massage for?
This type of massage is for anyone who has:
- Any pain, stiffness or aches in any part of the body and is causing you distress.
- Any kind of repetitive strain injury that could be making your life a misery.
- Tense body due to emotional trauma or after surgery.
Examples of some repetitive strain injury
- Office based jobs
- Playing computer games
- Intense use of a mobile phone
- Using a computer or laptop at work or at home with incorrect posture
- Gardening
- Decorating
Deep tissue massage can correct muscle and tissue injury.
Blood flow will be increased, which helps enable muscles and connective tissues to be softened. Damage can be identified and corrected.
When muscles are repaired and lengthened, the blood can flow more freely, allowing naturally occurring waste products/toxins to move through the body without restrictions, encouraging the muscles to work more efficiently and restoring functionality and mobility.
Deep tissue massage repairs any damage and prevents any further injury.
If injured muscles are not corrected
If the muscles are not working correctly, due to them being injured, waist products/toxins struggle to be removed by the body’s own healing system as blood flow is reduced. Muscles become inefficient.
Muscles become shorter and less flexible.
Shorter, less flexible muscles are more prone to injury.
If a muscle that is damaged is not repaired, the whole body gets fatigued, which can cause the body to not function correctly. The longer it is left, the deeper the injury becomes. Old injuries are harder to treat, but the good news is that they can be successfully treated.
Preventing injury, tension, painful 'knots'
Regular deep tissue massage ensures that there are no blockages, that are causing the stubborn waste products/toxins to not clear naturally ie: the muscles have become shortened, muscle fibres have been broken or the connective tissue has got 'stuck'. If identified, this can quickly be removed to make your body work more efficiently and help you think more clearly and sleep better.
Deep tissue massage aids deep breathing, which also calms the muscles down and allows free flowing blood. It helps you to think and sleep better.
So deep tissue massage greatly reduces the development of painful muscular problems occurring.
Do I have to wear anything special for the treatment?
If you are having massage on your back, you will be asked to remove your clothes from the waist up. Women will leave their bra on and this will be unhooked once settled onto the couch face down.
If you are having massage on your legs, you will be asked to remove your clothes from the waste down, but to leave underwear on. Alternatively, you could wear a pair of shorts.
If you would prefer, you can change into suitable clothing once you have arrived.
